Architect Burrell Foley Fischer's Angell Town Regeneration Scheme was named the best brick building in the UK at the Brick Development Association's 2002 awards.
Angell Town, a public housing project, was named supreme winner at an award ceremony at the Le Meridien Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The judges were impressed by the architect's choice of brick and the way each flat in the former deck-access estate had been given a ground-level entrance, and by the careful consideration given to access for cars and people.

The scheme, which is in Brixton, south London, was designed in association with its residents. The result was the replacement of the uniform, dehumanising 1970 estate with a mix of house types in a clean, modernist style.

The Best Structural Use of Brick Award went to a theatre at Queen Margaret's School in Escrick Park in York. Michael Driver, senior architect at the BDA, said: "This refined building displays an excellent use of a brick diaphragm wall."
