Switch to MHCLG to be completed by end of January

The Building Safety Regulator will be transferred out of the Health and Safety Executive in January, the building safety minister has confirmed.

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) announced over the summer the regulator would have its functions moved away from the body and into a new executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the department.

Earlier this week, the minister for building safety, fire and democracy, Samantha Dixon, began the process for the move which will see the BSR switched to its new home on 27 January.

Dixon said: “[The change] will strengthen lines of accountability and give a dedicated focus to BSR operations and is an important first step towards establishing a single construction regulator, the lead recommendation of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report.

“I am grateful to HSE for the leadership and experience it has brought to the establishment and early operations of the BSR, and for its ongoing support as this change is made.”
