Southmead hospital will target a BREEAM 'excellent' rating and low carbon footprint

A Carillion joint venture has achieved financial close on the Southmead Hospital PPP project for £430m of construction services and £170m of facilities management and maintenance services over a 30-year period.

The facility, which is Carillion’s largest PPP hospital to date, will be the most sustainable major acute hospital in the UK, with a carbon footprint below the government target of 3.43Te CO2 a year and a BREEAM rating of excellent.

Carillion chief executive John McDonough said: "Achieving financial close only some two months after being appointed as the preferred bidder for this project reflects the close working relationship that we have established with the North Bristol NHS Trust.”

Advanced construction work started in August last year and the hospital is due to open in early 2014.
