Latest design fortified to satisfy NYPD and anti-terrorist experts.

Architect David Childs has unveiled his latest design for New York’s Freedom Tower, to be built on the site of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, which were destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Following recommendations from the police and safety experts, he has designed a sturdier tower, built on a 60-metre concrete and steel pedestal, with a central spire that will be lit at night. The height of the tower – 541 metres, or 1776 ft (to signify the year in which America declared independence from Britain) – is one of the few features that remain from Daniel Libeskind’s original blueprint.

New York's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, called the new design a "spectacular addition to our skyline".

He said: "For generations to come, the Freedom Tower will be a symbol of New Yorkers' resolve and a powerful beacon of freedom to people around the world."

When complete the 82-storey tower will be the tallest building in the world.
