Queen’s speech sets out intention to build £17bn rail link from London to Birmingham

The coalition government confirmed its plans for a high-speed rail bill in today’s Queen’s speech.

Speaking in parliament the Queen said: “My government will support investment in new high-speed broadband internet connections, enable the construction of a high-speed railway network and reform the economic regulation of airports to benefit passengers.”

Accompanying notes published by Downing Street said that the government plans to introduce a hybrid bill for high-speed rail between Birmingham and London. The estimated cost is £17bn.
