Developer Castlebrooke wants to build 1,000 at city centre plot that was earmarked for offices

A consultation on plans to build up to 1,000 homes at a stalled derelict site in the middle of Belfast has begun.

Developer Castlebrooke filed a pre-application planning notice in the spring proposing 1,000 new homes and two hotels at the site next to St Anne’s Cathedral.

The firm has owned the plot since 2016 but plans for an office-led scheme called Tribeca were scuppered in the wake of the pandemic.

The masterplan proposes new homes, hotels and commercial space

Now rebranded as North Street/Donegall Street, the masterplan is proposingaffordable and social housing, homes for sale, homes for rent and co-living accommodation alongside two four-star hotels and up to 100,000sq ft of commercial and community space.

The plans also include a new public square and the restoration of five listed buildings.

A full planning application is expected to be submitted in October, with construction of one of the hotels anticipated to begin towards the end of next year with the entire development being built out over a five year period.

The consultation closes on 14 August.

Those working on the proposals include TSA Planning, Dublin practice OC+C Architects and Danish urban designer Schulze Grassov.
