Four councils in East London have given planning permission for the proposed Olympic complex in East London

London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics has been boosted by the news that four London Boroughs have granted planning permission for a new stadium complex in East London.

Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney and Waltham Forest gave the stadia the go-ahead after hearing that the project would bring thousands of jobs and homes to run down parts of their boroughs.

The 560-acre site near Stratford will feature a 80,000-capacity stadium and venues for hockey, basketball, handball, baseball, cycling and water sports. After the Games most of the facilities would remain and an athletes’ village will be turned into 9,000 homes.

The decision by the councillors means that London team can submit its detailed bid document to the International Olympic Committee in November knowing that a location for the Games has been agreed.
