E-petition 8th most popular on government website

The Institution of Structural engineers has backed a petition on the Prime Minister's E-Petitions website calling for the term ‘engineer’ to be protected.

A spokesperson said from the IStructE said, “Everyone knows what an architect is, and the term is legally protected. But in the UK an engineer could be the person who turns up to fix your TV. We are trying to reclaim the term ‘engineer’ and apply it to something specific rather than it being a catch all term.”

The petition was set up by aeronautical engineer Jon Jennings. According to the IStructE support has recently rocketed for the petition and it is the eighth most popular petition out of a total of 4,877 available on the website.
