Steve Smith will oversee construction division of Australia's biggest contractor, Leighton

The ex-head of Alfred McAlpine's civil engineering department is taking a new job with Australia's biggest contractor. Steve Smith will oversee the construction division of Leighton Contractors in Victoria and the neighbouring state, South Australia. He left McAlpine in January after five years, following its sale to Carillion.

Smith, who will be based in Melbourne, will also be in charge of Leighton's construction business in New Zealand. The company also carries out mining, property and telecoms work, and posted a turnover of £5.8bn in 2007, with a pre-tax profit of £282m.
