First five fully qualified electricians finish pilot training scheme at Heathrow

A pilot adult training scheme at Heathrow’s T5 has successfully produced its first five fully qualified electricians.

Sir Michael Latham, Chairman of the Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (JIB) hosted the course’s first graduation ceremony at Radisson Edwardian Hotel at Heathrow on Tuesday.

The result of a collaboration between BAA and T5 contractors, Amec Building and Facilities Services and Crown House Technologies, the scheme has provided locally-based adults, who had either left the industry or were seeking re-training, with the chance to learn both in classroom and on a major construction site.

Training was provided by JTL, Uxbridge College and Acton College with support from the Learning and Skills Council, AMICUS, the JIB and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA).

Sir Michael Latham said: “This type of training requires significant funding and I look to government and the industry to work together to secure resources which will be needed to follow up this example on other projects in future.”
