A team including Arup has won a competition to design the swimming venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The design, which was inspired by cells and soap bubbles, will be clad in ETFE foil cushions. The Water Cube is energy efficient: 90% of the solar energy falling on in is trapped within the structural zone and used to heat the pools and interior. The winning team also included Australian architect PTW, the China State construction and Engineering Corporation and the Shenzen Design Institute.
