Mark van den Berg, the former chairman of consultant Northcroft, has joined Turner & Townsend to head the contract services division.

His role will include developing the business in the public and private sectors both in the UK and internationally. He will also be identifying oil and gas clients.

Van den Berg worked on several international projects while at Northcroft including the Crowne Plaza in Madeira, offices for Barclays and Microsoft in Portugal and an integrated steel mill in Abuja, Nigeria.

Van den Berg left Northcroft in December. Previously chairman, his role had become part-time and non-executive six months earlier when he took an opportunity to chair a tourism board in Portugal. He returned to the UK shortly after.

Van den Berg and Nick Howkins, chief executive of Northcroft, said they had parted on amicable terms. “We agreed that it is always difficult to turn back the clock and the best option would be to move in different directions,” said Howkins.

Van den Berg had been a major shareholder in the company.
