Contractor will start work on redevelopment of Rotherham Central this month

Galliford Try Rail has been awarded a £5.8m contract to redevelop Rotherham Central station.

Starting this month and due to complete by Christmas, the contract for the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive includes a four-part canopy, improved access road, forecourt and refurbishment of the platforms as well as a ticket office, passenger lounge, lifts and stairs.

From mid-March the main station will close and passengers will use temporary facilities including a footbridge. Over half of the work will take place during overnight possessions.

The project forms part of the Rotherham Renaissance strategy and is part-funded by Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund.
