Architect due to be appointed next month

Gardiner & Theobald has been appointed project manager for the restoration of the Mackintosh building in Glasgow following last May’s fire.

The consultant will work with the winning architect, due to be appointed at the end of next month, and Liz Davidson, the Glasgow School of Art’s restoration project director.

Five architects have been shortlisted for the scheme. Page/Park, John McAslan and Avanti are all chasing the job, with Purcell and LDN Architects completing the line-up. They were selected from 14 entries via PQQ.

The five will all make presentations to a panel of GSA staff in the next few weeks.

The brief emphasises the twin requirements to create a working art and design college fit for the 21st century while respecting Mackintosh’s grade A-listed building.

But the finalists can choose whether to pursue detailed reconstruction or a more creative response.
