The Health and Safety Executive was this week investigating the death of a construction worker at a site in Canary Wharf.
The incident, which happened on Wednesday, took place at the "DS8" site in Canary Wharf, east London. Police said the worker was trapped under engineering equipment.
The site will house a Waitrose food store and a John Lewis department store.
The accident comes in the same week as 106 deaths were reported for the 2000/1 year period.
Principal HSE inspector Mike Williams confirmed the death. He said the police had yet to reveal the name of the deceased.
He said two HSE inspectors were currently on the site.
