Talks are under way to form an industry group to represent the interests of smaller builders

The idea is to bring together established bodies such as the National Federation of Builders (NFB) and the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) to campaign on certain issues, although each would maintain their independence in other respects.

Julia Evans, the chief executive of the NFB, said: “The idea that SME bodies could work together is certainly interesting. There is clearly an opportunity for organisations in the SME sector and the time is right for our sector to show a more united front.”

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the FMB, agreed: “If the construction SME sector is to have influence within government, then the trade associations need to develop more joined-up messages. By working together on common agreed issues we have a better chance of speaking with one voice, which is something the government has been calling for.”

Sources said the Scottish Building Federation might also be involved, but chief executive Michael Levack denied this. He said: “There are far too many organisations purporting to represent the industry. We would not be in favour of launching another.”
