26-year-old man was dead by the time ambulance crews arrived

The inquest into the death of a 26-year-old man killed in a crane accident on 6 March, opened yesterday.

Craig Page, from Islington, was killed when a crane fell into a basement excavation site at a property in Hampstead, north London. Witnesses said the worker was crushed across the torso by the jib. Three ambulances and an air ambulance were sent to the site, but the victim was already dead when the crews arrived.

A spokesperson from Harris Calnan, the main contractor on the site at which Page worked for a subcontractor, said everyone at the firm was shocked. The incident is now being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive. An inquest opened yesterday morning at St Pancras Coroners Court.
