Brutalist Sheffield estate is largest listed structure in Europe

Kier has been chosen for a £20m student accommodation job on the site of the grade II*-listed Park Hill site in Sheffield.

The original estate was built between 1957 and 1961, with developer Urban Splash revamping part of it with glass panels and colourful cladding – which saw the building and architects Hawkins\Brown and Studio Egret West shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2013.

Now student accommodation specialist Alumno has asked Kier to create 74 townhouse style units out of another block for phase three of the regeneration.

The renovated building will provide residency for 356 students.

The plans were drawn up by local studio Whittam Cox Architects, with Historic England and students from the University of Sheffield being consulted on the plans.
