Joint venture wins preferred bidder status for massive Leicester University Hospital NHS Trust project.

A joint venture between John Laing and Serco has won preferred bidder status for a healthcare PFI in Leicester worth at least £761m.

The joint venture will be responsible for designing, maintaining and supporting three hospitals for the Leicester University Hospital NHS Trust. Serco will provide the facility management and Laing’s accommodation arm Equion will provide the design and construction.

The first hospital will be delivered in 2009 with the whole project is expected to be completed in 2011.

Chief executive of John Laing Andy Friend said: “This bid required developing a competitive response to complex service and investment needs, which we look forward to fulfilling in partnership with the Leicester Hospitals Trust.”

Friend also claimed that the Leicester Hospitals Pathway Project was the largest hospital PFI outside London. The scheme covers the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital.
