Three law firms who deal with construction are set to merge to create the sixth largest law firm in the world by lawyer headcount.

Partners in CMS UK, Nabarro and Olswang voted overwhelmingly in favour of a proposal to combine the firms, which will be the largest merger ever in the UK legal services market.

The new firm, which will trade as CMS, will also create the sixth largest law firm in the UK by revenue.

It said it will have “leadership” in six key areas, including energy, infrastructure and projects, and real estate.

The new firm will bring together nearly 2,500 lawyers in the UK and over 4,500 lawyers globally.

With the addition of Nabarro and Olswang, CMS will have over 1,000 partners and over 7,500 employees across 65 offices in 36 countries around the world, with combined revenues of around £450m in the UK and over £1bn globally.

The merger is due to be completed on 1 May 2017.
