Elephant and Castle, Battersea Power Station and Camden Town Underground station have been named as among six of London’s worst eyesores.

They are also on a hit list compiled by Central London Partnership, a public-private sector body set up to champion investment in central London. It wants to see improvements at these sites by the end of the year.

Sir John Egan, chairman of the partnership, identified the troublespots on Monday at a meeting in the Waterloo offices of London Weekend Television attended by Nick Raynsford, the minister for London. The public nominated its least favourite locations after television and radio programmes transmitted under the banner Operation Eyesore. The other sites include the area around Waterloo Station and subways such as those near Marble Arch, Baker Street and Charing Cross.

Operation Eyesore, jointly sponsored by London Today, London Tonight, 95.8 Capital FM and McDonald’s, considered 500 responses to the public consultation. They were sorted by type and location. The sites were chosen to reflect the range of issues raised and the weight of response.

A series of special reports on the selected sites was scheduled to be broadcast on LWT from this Monday. The Central London Partnership will lobby site owners or other interested parties to get things improved.
