First reactor designed by Rolls-Royce to be built in north Wales

A team including Mace Consult has been appointed delivery partner to help build the UK’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plant at Wylfa on Anglesey.

The project is being led by the government’s nuclear energy body Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) while the reactors have been designed by Rolls-Royce SMR.

The Mace team is led by engineering and technology firm Amentum with Mace providing programme and project management advice. Others working on the scheme include T&T, German contractor Hochtief and components firm Unipart.

As well as north Wales, the team will work on plans for a SMR at Temelín in the Czech Republic.

Mace Consult chief executive Davendra Dabasia said: “We are committed to bringing our experience, expertise and insights gathered from different sectors and geographies to provide Rolls-Royce SMR with a service grounded in best practice and innovation.”

Mace Consult is due to start operating as standalone business from the beginning of next month as part of the deal to sell 75% of the business to Goldman Sachs. The sale is due to be formally wrapped up by the end of February.

Meanwhile, former Mace chief of staff Hannah Vickers has set up her own consultancy business called Built Confidence.

Vickers spent four years at Mace, including three years as executive chairman Mark Reynolds’ chief of staff, and left last summer.

The former Association of Consulting Engineers chief executive said Built Confidence was working in the built environment, mainly in energy and nuclear, for clients ranging from investors through to government.
