Mace has won the £25m contract to manage construction of the £40m Greater London Authority headquarters at London Bridge City.

Developer CIT Markborough chose Mace ahead of Bovis last Friday. Exterior and Schal were also in the running for the prestigious project.

CIT Markborough and the Government Office for London are still discussing the schedule for delivery of the 18 500 m2 helmet-shaped building, designed by Foster and Partners. A spokesperson for Mace said: “It will probably be a fast-build programme. We have put various ideas and options to CIT Markborough.”

Enabling works will start in November, and the scheme will begin on site in early 2000.

  • CIT Markborough has also commissioned Foster and Partners to produce concept designs for a new BBC headquarters at London Bridge City.

A spokesperson for the BBC said it had briefed various developers and their architects about what it might want if it decides to move to new premises when the lease on Bush House expires in 2005.

“CIT is one developer who is keen to have the BBC as a tenant. Foster has done a masterplan to entice us to go there,” she said.
