New ground to be centrepiece of wider development of neighbouring 150ha site

Manchester United has said its new 100,000-seat stadium will be built on land around 350m away from Old Trafford with a masterplan for the wider development due to be discussed by the local council later this month.

The Fosters-designed stadium will be the centrepiece of a 150ha proposal which will be purpose-built for sport, entertainment and year-round activity.

Called the Trafford Wharfside Strategic Masterplan, the plans will be discussed for approval by Trafford council on 22 July with a consultation on the plans due to run for two months from the end of the month.

How the masterplan will look with the stadium as its centrepiece

The masterplan has been drawn up by Allies and Morrison as well as engineer Civic, landscape architect SLA and property firm JLL.

As well as a new stadium, the area will include 15,000 new homes, parks and waterside spaces and, the club said, bring in a £7.3bn per year boost to the UK economy.

Trafford council leader Tom Ross said: “We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day – and we’re looking for as many residents and businesses as possible to help us to shape this vision, through our forthcoming consultation process.

“Wharfside will become a network of attractive neighbourhoods in which to live, work, wander, explore, relax with family, enjoy nature and wildlife, meet friends, eat out, have a drink, shop and be entertained.”
