Andrew Hunter’s departure comes after firm said its executive board was being cut by a third

Sir Robert McAlpine’s engineering and technical services director is leaving the firm.

Andrew Hunter’s departure comes after the contractor yesterday said it had shrunk its executive board from nine to six with with Grant Findlay, previously executive managing director of buildings, and Steve Hudson, former executive managing director of infrastructure, also leaving the board as part of a rejig at the business which will see the contractor focus on “three dominant” sectors – commercial, healthcare and industrial.

The news about Hunter, not announced in McAlpine’s original statement, was confirmed in an internal email, seen by Building, which said Hunter was going – but added that Findlay and Hudson were staying with the company.

Andrew Hunter has been with the business for seven years

McAlpine has not said what their new roles are, with sources close to the company saying the pair were “helping with the reorganisation in the coming months”.

But several industry sources have told Building they understand Findlay, who rejoined McAlpine more than two years ago after working at the abandoned Sphere entertainment project in east London, will eventually go after a period of gardening leave later this autumn.

Hunter became director of engineering three years ago, succeeding Alison Cox who had been promoted to boss of the London business in August 2021.

At the time of his appointment, McAlpine said: “In his new role, [Hunter] joins our executive leadership team, the company’s main decision-making body responsible for delivering business strategy and performance.”

Before joining McAlpine in 2018, Hunter worked at Skanska in several senior leadership roles.

As part of the changes, McAlpine said a number of back office roles were also at risk.

Building understands the number is less than 50 although McAlpine declined to say how many jobs could be lost as a result.
