It is part of Network Rail’s plan to reduce its existing number of contractors from six to four.

The companies that survived are Balfour Beatty, Jarvis, Amey SECO (JV), and First Engineering.

Proposals to rationalise the framework were first announced in December 2006.

The contractors were judged on safety, engineering quality, cost and ability to start and finish work on time.
