Jennie Price, who takes over as the Construction Confederation’s chief executive when Ian Deslandes retires later this year, has set out her agenda to take the organisation into the new millennium.

Price told Building that she wanted to build on the confederation’s success by ensuring that it became more focused, developing an agenda of issues “which will unify the membership”.

She continued: “One possible area would be the performance improvement agenda coming out of Egan, and how contractors of all sizes can play a part in that. Another is to attract high-quality recruits at all levels of the industry. We ought to be able to make progress on that and communicate that construction offers exciting opportunities.”

Price will be the first woman to head the industry body. It represents 5000 construction companies and accounts for 75% of industry turnover.

“I’m mildly daunted by the challenge of the job, but not by the fact that I’m a woman – there are a number of senior women in construction at the moment. I’m very much looking forward to it; it’s a job I’ve always wanted to do.”

Price, a barrister by training, is currently director of the Major Contractors Group. It has not been said who will succeed her there, but an announcement is expected soon.
