First images by SOMA Architects show how the controversial Park51 community centre could look

Drawings for $120m Park51 project have been revealed, showing a multifaith community centre, including gym and playground.

The Park51 website, backed by developer Sharif el-Gamal, said: “These new images display an updated exterior and provide a first look into Park51’s interior and lend some insight on how we’re envisioning the project.”

The proposals include a mosque, which has been dubbed “Ground Zero mosque” despite the fact that it will be two blocks away from the former twin towers.

The centre also has multi-faith facilities including a day-care centre, sports and education spaces and a memorial to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Sharif El-Gamal has been reported as saying that the prayer space would be in the basement of the building.
