Chartered surveyor takes over from Ted Hartill in a role that dates back to 1478

The City of London Corporation has appointed Peter Bennett to the role of City Surveyor.

Bennett, a chartered surveyor, takes up his new post from January 2008 replacing Ted Hartill who has been in the job since 1985.

The job of City Surveyor dates back to 1478 but in its modern incarnation the jobholder manages and coordinates all activity relating to commercial property and construction owned by the City of London. He also has responsibility for the City of London’s operational property such as The Guildhall and Mansion House.

Bennett has been the Deputy City Surveyor since 1990 and his main focus is on the long-term development of the City business cluster including infrastructure services.

Bennett said: “I am delighted to be taking up the City Surveyor position. This is a demanding but very fulfilling role at a time when the square mile is going through exciting changes.”
