Middle East identified as 'boom centre' for solar energy

Qatar has announced plans to build a $1bn solar power plant.

Last month a report by consultants AT Kearney said the Middle East was a potential "boom centre" for solar energy over the next 10 years, and could create up to 10,000 jobs in the industry in the region.

A report in Qatar’s The Peninsula newspaper says that around 25 local and international investors are interested in the solar power project.

The idea was first suggested back in May at an exhibition in Doha. The report said the power plant could mean annual revenues of up to $90bn for the region.

Last year the World Bank announced plans to invest $5.5bn into Middle Eastern solar energy projects.
