Eleven firms are in with a chance to win a competition to manage the capital projects work for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games including the centrepiece athletics stadium as well as the aquatics centre.

Birmingham city council has said it will procure the job using Crown Commercial Service’s Project Management and Design Services framework.

Lendlease, Mace, Arcadis and Gleeds are among the firms on the framework’s project management lot, which the council has confirmed it will use to procure the job.

Council documents said: "External professional services are required to support the council’s delivery and responsibility for the capital projects for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"Funding is in part from the existing approved Commonwealth Games Delivery Team revenue budget. The bulk of the funding is a grant from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport."

The projects the successful firm will be responsible for include the development of Alexander Stadium (pictured), which will host the athletics and opening and closing ceremonies, and the construction of the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

The job also includes the Perry Barr regeneration scheme, which will be the athletes' village, public realm work and other venue developments.

The professional services required will include strategic advice, cost and value management, programme assurance and risk and issue management.

The proposed start date for the contract is 21 October and will last just under three years.

There are already project teams in place for several individual schemes on the Commonwealth Games job.

Arup has designed the redevelopment of Alexander Stadium, while Mace is project managing the £70m scheme.

Wates has been chosen to build the £60m aquatics centre, which is designed by Robert Limbrick, while Lendlease has been picked for the £350m athletes' village.

This scheme has been designed by a team led by local firms Glancy Nicholls Architects and Glenn Howells Architects.
