Foster and Partners has been called in to complete a New York skyscraper begun by newspaper proprietor William Randolph Hearst, the man who inspired Orson Welles' film Citizen Kane in 1928. The architect has designed a high-tech 42-storey tower of 80,000 m2 to go with the six-storey stone-faced base built at Columbus Circle. An external structure in stainless steel triangles offers greater strength than a conventional rectilinear structure and a more dynamic faceted image. Tischman Speyer Properties is development manager, with Admanson Associates associate architect. Cantor Seinuk Group is structural engineer and Flack & Kurtz services engineer.
