Sacked steelworkers at Wembley national stadium were still demonstrating at the site as Building went to press, despite apparently having no support from unions.

About 90 workers were continuing the unofficial protests, which began last week when steel contractor Hollandia-Fast Track terminated contracts after a dispute over working hours.

Press speculation has suggested that, although the pickets are so far unofficial, the GMB is planning to set up talks between parties to resolve the dispute.

A source at main contractor Multiplex rubbished the claims.

He said: “We’ve been speaking to the GMB. They said there would be no talks as there was nothing to talk about.”

The source added that unions had sent letters of repudiation to Hollandia-Fast Track, absolving themselves of any involvement in the pickets.
