The Office of Government Commerce this week published a guide for small businesses explaining how best to cash in on the expected huge increase in government spending.
The OGC believes Tendering for Government Contracts will make it easier for small businesses to secure government work by giving advice on how to bid for it. The guide has been jointly published by the Small Business Service.

The government's wish to spend £19bn over the next three years on improving the UK's infrastructure, which makes the guide especially relevant to construction firms.

The booklet gives details on where to find opportunities in the public sector, how to bid for contracts, and includes a list of useful contacts. It is hoped that this guidance will simplify access to the government marketplace for small businesses.

Peter Gershon, OGC chief executive, said: "This enables small and medium enterprises to make their bid more attractive to public sector organisations, increasing their chances of winning government contracts."

The booklet also invites businesses to detail the difficulties they have faced in the past when trying to win government work, and outlines all the areas the government is involved in, from health to education.
