Sunand Prasad will succeed Jack Pringle as the next president of the RIBA.
Prasad, founding partner of London practice Penoyre & Prasad, beat off competition from Valerie Owen, who was competing to become the first female president of the RIBA, and third candidate Peter Phillips.
The election process hit the headlines last month when it emerged that Phillips was a BNP member and had stood as a BNP candidate in a council election.
Prasad beat second-place candidate Owen by a narrow margin of 500 votes. Phillips was eliminated in the first round, using a single transferable vote system.
Prasad, currently the RIBA’s vice president of policy and strategy, will become president elect on 1 September 2006 and will succeed Jack Pringle on 1 September 2007.
