Liberty Properties will contribute £30m towards cost of University of Newport campus by developing innovative business park and 1,500 homes.

Ambitious plans for a new university campus, business park and 1,500 new homes in homes have been proposed for Newport by a Swansea property developer.

Liberty Properties’ plans for the new University of Newport campus and linked 50-acre research and development business park were revealed yesterday.

Liberty said it would give Newport 120 acres of land in Caerleon next to the existing main campus and contribute £33m towards the construction costs.

The University Park Newport project would also see 1,500 new homes and a £10m investment on infrastructure including a new relief road.

Liberty said that in the long term the scheme could include a new 15,000-seater athletics stadium and the relocation of the Royal Gwent Hospital.

The university’s board of governors is considering the plans and an alternative scheme that would see investment in a four-acre campus in the city centre.

The scheme is fronted by former Welsh rugby captain Scott Gibbs.
