Firm’s income last year hit £230m mark

Regional contractor Beard posted a record turnover last year with the firm giving away £4.5m to charity, the company’s latest report and accounts have revealed.

The firm, which is based in Swindon, said construction turnover was up 16% to £230m although pre-tax profit was down 13% to £4.5m.

But the company said it gave away £4.5m to regional charities instead of shareholders, up from £100,000 last time.

In a note accompanying its accounts, the firm said: “[The donation] will support both the Beard staff and family charity activities in the years ahead.”

Beard said the company’s net cash position at the year-end was up £900,000 to £45.2m.

The firm has 62 live projects with the firm’s ongoing jobs including renovation work for St John’s College in Oxford while it completed building an African forest for Bristol Zoo.

Finance director Fraser Johns said: “Our ethos of prompt and faultless delivery, alongside a continued focus on getting the basics right have laid the foundations for the strongest three-year period in the company’s history.”

The number of employees at the year-end was up 5% to 354 last year.
