Job at scientific institute designed by BDP and set to start in 2028
Two firms are left in the race for a £200m-plus expansion of the John Innes Centre, a scientific institute in Norwich.
The scheme was given planning last week by South Norfolk district council with the job described by the centre as creating “modern laboratory and office space, integrated technology platforms, training facilities and collaborative areas at the heart of the Norwich Research Park”.
The scheme, which is being developed by the John Innes Centre and The Sainsbury Laboratory, has been designed by BDP.
Building understands that Mace and Bovis are both waiting to hear who has won the deal which is known as the Main Laboratory Building (MLB).
It will run across 21,000sq m and include 12,000sq m of lab space with work slated to start in 2028.
Professor Cristóbal Uauy, director of the John Innes Centre, said: “Securing planning permission for the MLB is a fantastic milestone. As climate pressure grows, it is vital that plant and microbial science is equipped to support the UK to lead the way in the development of resilient crops, healthier foods and sustainable molecules for vaccines and new medicines.”
BDP first won the scheme back in 2018, having seen off Stanton Williams and Grimshaw for the job.
As well as architect, BDP is also structural, civil and MEP engineer with Aecom as cost consultant. Project manager is Turner & Townsend.
