Deal let under Be First’s £1bn overhaul of Barking

Wates has won its first job on a £1bn framework set up by an east London council to transform the middle of Barking.

Be First, Barking and Dagenham council’s development company, has appointed the firm to a £55m scheme to revamp the Gascoigne Estate.

The proposed plans will see part of the 1960s estate redeveloped as 200 new homes. Work is expected to start in February next year and finish in 2022.

Along with McLaren, which is already working on two schemes for Be First including one to build a 29-storey tower in the town, and Willmott Dixon, Wates is one of three firms on the highest value lot of the framework – schemes over £10m.

A further four firms have booked places on the lower value lot.
