Job at HMP Wayland will add 250 places to 1,200-space jail
Wates has signed on the dotted line for a scheme to expand a prison in Norfolk where it is already carrying out fire safety work.
The scheme at HMP Wayland in Thetford will include 247 extra places at the category C jail, new kitchen and new rehabilitation facilities.
The project will include a new four-storey houseblock at the prison which currently has a capacity of 1,200.
The scheme also includes classrooms, a light industrial workshop, all weather sports pitch and exercise areas for outdoor activity as part of prisoner rehabilitation and skills development to help prison leavers gain future employment.
Wates said it will employ 10 prison leavers – directly and through its supply chain – as part of the job which is set to finish by the end of 2028..
Others working on the deal includes Wates’ sister firms SES Engineering and SES Manufacturing as well as concrete firm FP McCann and civils firm Aden Contracting. Design consultants include BakerHicks and Pick Everard.
The job, which was given planning in the spring, is part of a £500m deal Wates and Kier picked up three years ago to expand six prisons under an initiative called the Accelerated Houseblocks Delivery Programme.
Wates is also carrying out a separate fire safety contract at the same site, worth £70m and which is due to finish in February 2029.
