The developer of the new Wembley Stadium has agreed to pay Brent council £17m to improve infrastructure around the stadium in a bid to gain planning permission for the £230m project.

It is understood that a deal has been struck between developer Wembley National Stadium and the government taskforce set up to regenerate the area.

Under the deal, Brent council will get the £30m it has demanded for the scheme to go ahead. Wembley will pay £17m, with the balance coming from the taskforce, which is chaired by Sir Nigel Mobbs.

Brent had threatened to refuse planning permission unless the developer contributed £30m as part of a Section 106 agreement.

A spokesperson for the council said that it would approve the scheme at a planning committee meeting on 15 May as long as it received written assurances from Wembley National Stadium and the taskforce about their respective contributions by 5 May.

A spokesperson for Wembley National Stadium said it would provide the assurance by that date. The government taskforce was unavailable for comment.
