Stewart Brundell appointment heralds wider rejig at division

Willmott Dixon has promoted company veteran Stewart Brundell to run its construction business.

The £1bn division is the firm’s biggest and Brundell’s appointment follows the decision earlier this year by John Waterman to step down after a decade in charge.

Chief executive Graham Dundas said: “Stewart’s promotion to COO reflects both his exceptional track record and our focus on creating the right platform for our next stage of growth. His near 40-year career from trainee to COO is a tremendous success story and demonstrates the strength of our succession planning.”

Stewart Brundell has been with the firm nearly 40 years

Brundell was previously in charge of Willmott Dixon’s London and East region and is being replaced at this business by Simon Ramage, currently the firm’s director of delivery.

Willmott Dixon said Ramage, who has been with the firm nearly 30 years, will become deputy managing director before becoming managing director at the start of next year.

The firm said it was giving extended strategic roles within its construction leadership team, with Anthony Dillon, MD in the North, overseeing growth, and Peter Owen, MD in the Midlands, supporting operational delivery.

Richard Cotter, a former boss of leisure retailer Snow & Rock, has also been appointed to the construction business as a non-executive.

In its last set of results, Willmott Dixon said turnover, which includes £150m of fit-out revenue, was flat at £1.2bn last year but £20m recovered on cladding remediation work meant it returned to a pre-tax profit of £47m from a £14.4m pre-tax loss last time.
