During my security management studies, via Loughborough University, Risk Management was described as: “a systematic study of the problem within the context of the particular organisation and then the development of a cohesive strategy based on the information and resources available”.
These are principles which Carl Roper would recognise and ones which he describes in his book.
Unlike many of the good, bad and indifferent books on risk management, this one avoids a common weakness. The flaw being that although they may cover the subject, particularly the required strategy, they are often weak on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of putting theory into practice. This book breaks the mould in this important respect.
The text, which is bristling with information and advice, offers a step-by-step framework to evaluate and apply a policy of security risk management which can be utilised in any organisational setting.
It includes case studies, with exercises, to help build understanding and confidence, plus annexes containing specimen forms and background intelligence.
Although written from a US perspective, this presents few difficulties. One possible exception is the title of a fictitious company in a case study, with the unfortunate name of “The Wanker County Environmental Coalition”. Clearly something unintentional is gained in the translation!
