The multi-million pound contract, which will run over five years, is yet to be awarded, but The Facilities Business has been told that Profectus is 'strongly placed'.
A spokeswoman from NTL said a decision on which services are to be provided was still to be finalised.
It is believed that alongside Profectus, Johnson Controls, Citex and Servus FM were the companies originally shortlisted for the deal. The negotiations are subject to a confidentiality clause.
Profectus is a relatively new player in the facilities management field. It was established in November 1999 as a business consultancy before being bought in July last year by Connaught.
Connaught, an Exeter-based facilities management company, which began as a concrete repair business in Sidmouth, has posted sales growth for the past four years. In the year to August 2000, sales at Connaught totalled £77.61m – up 42 per cent.
A source said he believed Profectus is essentially handling a Connaught bid.
Last month former deputy chief executive of WS Atkins, David James, joined Connaught as executive chairman.
Profectus managing director Mike McGeever was unwilling to confirm the company had tendered for the contract.
The formal award of the contract is unlikely to take place for several months. A source said there are 'uncertain elements' which need to be ironed out before a deal is closed.
Delaware-based NTL's operations are focused in the UK, where it is the country's biggest cable TV system operator and has 26 regional centres. It expects to have 1.25 million digital TV subscribers by the end of the year.
Over the past two years NTL has taken over 11 companies in its drive to become a major player in digital TV in Europe.
