We take a look at new additions and improvements in control panels since the launch of DD243:2002
Innovative panel
Novar is distributing ADE's cost-effective, innovative intruder alarm panel, the Logic Six. It uses proximity technology in the shape of a key fob that enables the user to set and unset the panel by presenting a key fob to the proximity coil built into the panel.

Aimed at domestic applications, the microcontroller-based six zone panel was designed to combat problems associated with end users and keypads, minimising potential false alarms and avoiding costly return visits by the installer to reprogramme the system.

Logic Six is compatible with all types of security devices, such as PIRs, vibration detectors, panic buttons and external sounders.

Upgrade kit
Cooper Security's upgrade kit enables older Scantronic control panels to be easily upgraded to ensure they comply with DD243:2002.

Older panels, such as the Scantronic 9600, 9610, 9800, 9800+, 808 and 816 can be upgraded quickly and efficiently, simply by modifying the existing control panel and keypad. Everything else, including all cabling and accessories can remain in place.

The kit includes:

  • 09851 uk-55 PCB modified to accept the 9824 8-zone plug-on expander card
  • 9930EUR-50 ScanProx compatible keypad
  • leads to connect the existing transformer and battery
  • stand-off sticky pads for mounting onto older enclosures
  • installation manuals and upgrade installation notes

The brand new kit comes with all the additional benefits of the Scantronic 9851 system, such as remote diagnostics, which reduces the cost of maintenance visits, local and remote upload/download, radio expanders and up to four lcd keypads and 16 user codes. The kit is expandable up to 40 zones.

To install the upgrade kit, the wires to the old PCB are simply unattached, before unscrewing and removing it. The new upgrade kit PCB is then screwed onto existing mountings, and wires re-attached.

ACPO compliant panels
Cooper Security's new range of hybrid panels and peripherals are compliant with ACPO's DD243:2002 regulations and are aimed at domestic and small-to-medium sized commercial installations.

The 9751, 9752 and 9851 control panels share common programming, making it easy to switch between them to suit different installation requirements. All offer 8 zones with expandability to 40 zones using hardwired or wirefree expansion modules, programming options and functions to allow sequential alarm reporting as alarm confirmation.

The peripherals operate on the dedicated intruder alarm frequency, 868MHz narrowband, avoiding interference from other radio services or stations.

The new products also include remote diagnostics as standard.

Elegant icon
The PC1565 from DSC combines impressive technology with elegant design to produce a system for residential and small commercial applications.

The advanced software-driven six/eight zone system offers a large range of security features and functions: five single function keys, three double-push emergency buttons, a choice of four keypad styles, two programmable outputs and 39 access codes.

The panel comes with a built-in up/download communicator offering a choice of protocols. The PC1565 can also send notification of any system event to another telephone number, including a personal pager. The events can either be single emergency alarms or sequential activation of intruder zones – a fundamental requirement for police response.

Our Bench Testers' conclusion was: "This is a versatile panel, well designed and solidly engineered with a built-in communicator. A wide range of programming and reporting options are available. It can be installed as a hard-wired, hybrid or Class VI wireless system. The addition of the attractively-styled good quality Icon LCD 55001Z keypad results in a user-friendly installation.

Hassle-free installation
Visonic has a programmable wireless security system that is said to give hassle-free installation of a lifestyle management system for smart homes and offices.

The PowerMax home automation system enables users to take full control of the system's capabilities remotely via mobile or touch-tone phones or locally via a sophisticated but simple intelligent control panel.

Using the company's patented CodeSecure technology to ensure secure remote arming and disarming, the Visonic PowerMax controls security alarms, lighting, heating, CCTV monitoring, water and gas leak alarms, plumbing and outdoor irrigation systems.

It also provides social care and elderly assistance as well as managing TV and entertainment devices, telephones, fax, PC, internet and other household appliances.

An invaluable feature allows pets to walk freely through the home without setting off false alarms. And a latchkey mode enables parents to be notified when the children arrive home from school.

Wired or wireless
The biggest change introduced by DD243 concerns how the confirmed alarm operation is controlled when a user re-enters the premises. Now Intellisense is offering a new control panel – the Securit ST900C – that allows remote setting and unsetting, with on-board communications and a full range of peripherals.

The 8 zone, wired/wireless hybrid with built-in communications comes with an lcd remote keypad and a built-in receiver. The four-button remote keyfobs allow setting and unsetting the system as demanded by the DD243 portable ACE requirements.

The unit uses the 868MHz frequency with FM transmission, giving a strong and clean signal and there are up to 8 RF keyfobs with 4 remote keypads. An LED with audible key-press, backlit keys and LCD RF keypad with a built-in radio receiver.

The ST900C is easy and cost effective to install and comes with a remote servicing option.

Setting made easy

The Simple Set from ADE has been designed to make the alarm setting on control panels easier for the elderly and infirm. The proximity tag reader can be fitted into Optima and Accenta G3 panels, enabling users to set and unset the control panel simply by presenting a transponder tag in the shape of a keyfob close to the reader. Simple Set allows the user to operate the system without having to use the keypad. It offers a single set/unset action in line with the latest ACPO requirements for reducing false alarms. As well as being available for connection with newly installed G3 panels, Simple Set can also be retrofitted into existing installations and is compatible with any panel having a Keyswitch input to set and unset the system. The reader has an LED display and audible indicator. It can support up to eight uniquely numbered key fobs. Unlike many proximity products, it does not contain integral batteries and neither does it require buttons to operate. It has a high level of security in terms of possible code repetitiveness and is more user-friendly than other keypads.

Going plastic

CSL’s CS3000 keypad alarm panel has been designed with durable plastic buttons to help avoid errors caused by the ‘sticking’ commonly associated with membrane keys. The stylish multi-media keypad has backlit keys to make operation easy in the dark. With the addition of a Digi-Modem and Audio Card, it enables access to a pre-programmed helpdesk number. A two-way conversation can then take place with the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) or engineer directly from the keypad, easing the worry of seeking assistance in the event of an accidental alarm or other technical query. The CS3000 alarm features sequential reporting. In the event of a break-in, it can report the path of intrusion. Using a signalling device, the alarm will feed this information to the ARC who can then pinpoint the occupied area. For the protection of more remote areas, such as outbuildings, by adding an ADD32 radio module, the location can be linked to the main alarm system without the need for costly and often impractical wiring. The CS3000 uses the CS3070 Digi-Modem to send signals to the ARC via the telephone line. The panel is easy to set and unset and can take up to five keypads. It is easily upgraded to dual-signalling for secure alarm transmission and meets EN 50131 standards.
