The number of projects finishing on time has shown little improvement according to the latest set of key performance indicators for M&E contractors.

This is the fifth set of figures to be produced by BSRIA, which show that 53% of projects analysed were completed late.

Gerry Samuelsson-Brown of BSRIA said that the extent of client variations made to the contract made a difference to the project finish time. He said: “Where there were major variations to contracts, 63% of projects were late, compared with 47% where there were no, or minor, variations. Nonetheless, predictability of time has shown little improvement over the last five years.”

Of the 10 headline KPIs, seven have shown continuous improvement over the last five years, including productivity, design, safety, profitability, predicted cost and defects of building services.

Clients said the delivery of operation and maintenance manuals was the worst aspect of service. Samuelsson-Brown said this was because firms leave it too late. “Almost 90% of an O&M manual can be written before the building is completed, it doesn’t have to be left to the last minute,” he said.
