Around £28 billion is spent on refurbishing or extending existing non-residential buildings each year.
This is the finding of a report by industry body Construction Forecasting and Research (CFR). Statistics reveal that the repair and maintenance market is worth around £12 billion per year, while £16 billion is spent on the refurbishment and extension of buildings.

Alan Armitage, managing director of CFR, says: "Until now no detailed information on expenditure on non-residential refurbishment, repair and maintenance has been available.

"This research seeks to map this statistical black hole and will enable contractors and suppliers of construction services to improve their knowledge of the market structure and procurement methods."

The research has been gathered by tracking expenditure patterns of clients according to the sector – retail, health, manufacturing etc. Client spend can also be tracked by the type of work – shops, offices etc – and the way in which the work is procured, from individual contracts through to partnering.
