Details of the merger have yet to be finalised, but it will involve the creation of three active associations which all members of the RTPI and Room will be able to join.
One will concentrate on representing people "concerned with the creation of decent housing for everyone", according to a statement from the RTPI. The other two organisations will represent and lobby for those engaged in community planning and elected council members respectively.
In the meantime, the two organisations will work together under the name Room@RTPI.
RTPI president Michael Haslam said there could be "no better time" for the merger than in the wake of last week's comprehensive spending review, which pledged more money to speed up the planning system. "The recent ministerial announcements showed the importance that the government places not only on planning, housing and neighbourhood renewal, but on involving all those who are concerned with these key issues," he said.
