Housing associations need to break the monopoly that private companies have over housebuilding, according to Lord Best, director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Speaking at the Tackling the Crisis in Social Housing conference in London on Monday, Best said that housing associations should take the lead role in building social housing.

“[Private housebuilders] are not equipped with the vision and masterplanning skills to create sustainable communities,” he said.

At the same event, housing minister Lord Rooker said no housing legislation would be introduced until the government’s heavy schedule of existing bills had passed through parliament.
