When it was launched fifteen years ago, Rules of thumb rapidly became the practising engineer's bible for the quick estimation of space allocation, thermal loads, system features and comfort criteria.
It has been six years since the last update, and in that period building design has changed considerably. The industry has seen the introduction of displacement ventilation and static cooling systems, the outlawing cfc-based refrigeration systems, and a new era of low energy design strategies.
This innovation has to be underpinned by tried and tested engineering. No matter how complex the building technology, it still has to be fit for purpose, correctly sized, buildable and maintainable.
All the essential data that designers need to determine the minimum requirements for a wide range of applications has been updated in this latest edition. It has also been extended to cover more subjects, such as energy consumption benchmarks, electrical systems and basic cost data. All the tables have been revised, updated and checked by BSRIA working under the watchful eye of practising building services engineers.
This edition has also been redesigned and reorganised to make the information more accessible.
The data will be most useful at inception and outline briefing stages, where costs and space allowances are being discussed with architects. Users will also find the tables useful at the outline, scheme and detailed design stages when alternative strategies are being discussed and checked.
